TERMINET project has been honored with the Strategic Liaisons Award for Maturity of Results, Presentation, and Exploitation of Outcomes, at the Open Continuum EUCloudEdgeIoT Conference, held in Brussels. The project was funded by HORIZON2020 and coordinated by the University of Western Macedonia with Prof. Panagiotis Sarigiannidis, the Director of ITHACA Lab, as the Scientific Manager.
TERMINET project proposed, implemented and validated a new architecture model for the Next Generation Internet of Things (NG-IoT), enabling complex and demanding applications in multiple sectors of the 4th industrial revolution, such as in Precision Agriculture with the use of augmented reality, in the training of critical infrastructure personnel with the use of haptic devices and virtual reality and in the effective preventive maintenance in supply chain environment. In TERMINET, solutions were implemented to transfer intelligence from cloud to the edges of the network, reducing the waiting time and making innovative applications possible, such as the training of medical personnel in virtual reality environment remotely. Furthermore, data privacy protection tools were developed during system design using federated learning, while cross-sectional cyber-attack protection algorithms were validated at all levels of the infrastructure.
The diverse and extensive work produced during the implementation of TERMINET includes the publication of 2 reports with policy initiatives for standardization, 57 scientific publications, funding for 22 PhDs, the development of 28 new tools and 10 open-source repositories, the establishment of 6 international collaborations, the organization of 12 seminars and conferences and the participation in 10 invited talks. Another action of TERMINET was the establishment of the 1st spin-off of the University of Western Macedonia, MetaMind Innovations IKE (MINDS) for further utilization of the project’s research results.
