5,600,000 euros will be granted to the University of Western Macedonia for two research proposals, in the framework of the “Regional Excellence” Action. To enhance innovation capacity in the Greek regions and in the context of the Smart Specialization Strategy, the two research teams in Western Macedonia, the University of Western Macedonia and the National Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), support excellence, entrepreneurship and development of modern research infrastructures in Western Macedonia.
The first proposal, “Development of new innovative low carbon energy technologies to enhance excellence in Western Macedonia”, coordinated by the Assistant Professor Mr. Tsouknidas Alexandros, Department of Mechanical Engineering, was submitted in collaboration with the CERTH Institute of Chemical processes and Energy Resources. The project involves the development and transition of the region towards a cyclical economy of low and / or zero carbon emissions, climate change and protection of the environment. The proposal, having received the largest funding amount among all approved projects (4,000,000 euros), aims at upgrading the research infrastructure of the University with equipment worth 1 million euros, thus, offering job to 62 young researchers and enhancing research and innovation in Western Macedonia as well as promoting excellence in emerging technologies.
The second proposal, AGRO-TOUR – “New technologies and innovative approaches in Agri-food and Tourism to enhance excellence in Western Macedonia”, organised by the Assistant Professor Tsipouras Markos, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, is a partnership of the University of Western Macedonia and the Institute of Chemical Processes and Energy Resources of CERTH. With a total budget of 1,600,000 euros, the project includes actions for bio-economy and agri-food, precision agriculture, smart livestock and tourism. Key priorities are creating new job vacancies for more than 30 new PhD and postdoctoral research scientists, and upgrading UoWM’s research infrastructure.
