For the University of Western Macedonia, the 18th October was a day dedicated to science, research and innovation, with Mr. Margaritis Schinas, the Vice-President of the European Commission, as the official guest.

Mr. Schinas participated as the keynote speaker in the discussion forum organized, where distinguished scientists highlighted aspects of the research activity in the country and at the University of Western Macedonia in particular, as well as the challenges emerging at the European level.

In his speech on the “European way of life”, the Vice-President of the EU made reference to the European policies for education, health, security and their anthropocentric approach, emphasizing Europe’s need for the development of skills for its human resources.

In his opening speech, the Rector of the University of Western Macedonia, Professor Theodoros Theodoulidis, referred to the Institution’s contribution to the knowledge economy in the region through the creation of a significant number of jobs in cutting-edge technologies as well as its participation in the Innovation Zone, which supports the link between the university community and businesses.

Mr. Schinas was given a tour of the University premises, which he described as an “academic jewel”, adding that his relations with the University will be long-lasting. During his meeting with the student groups and the University’s research project managers, he expressed his admiration for their academic achievements and the scientific applications they find.

The discussion forum was preceded by morning activities for which the University opened its doors to the students of local schools, giving them the opportunity to take an exciting “journey” into the world of science and research.
